Let us not get excessively gushy here ...
After news broke the Federal government would delay the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline, the environment community was quick to celebrate. Every major eco-friendly group within the nation released claims saluting the leader for hearing the concerned voices that they assisted provide the general public spotlight. My mailbox was flooded with words of praise in the League of Conservation Voters, the nation's Wildlife Federation, the NRDC, Buddies of the world, and so forth and so on.
Robert Redford even shot a brief video where he personally thanked the leader for stalling the Keystone XL:
And all sorts of that's fine and dandy. When I pointed out yesterday, it has been a long time since environmentalists have registered a significant victory -- even when that victory was tempered because the pipeline only has been postponed, not refused. That can bring me to my point: To not rain on anyone's parade (we deserve a minute of celebration), but this is just a small part of the best direction. Even when the Keystone XL is eventually cancelled -- or dies removed from insufficient investor support -- that will not change the truth that the U . s . States continues to be hopelessly hooked on non-renewable fuels. Even when we have diffused one pending carbon explosive device, we are still along the way of overflowing millions more.
My hope is the fact that victories like that one can help build the momentum to create the type of people energy essential to move the needle on comprehensive climate policy -- policy that prices carbon, removes subsidies for oil companies, and encourages clean energy development.
Because even when we protect against each and every suggested oil pipeline and coal plant out of this day forward, we'd be moving a massively not sustainable quantity of carbon pollutants in to the atmosphere on the routine basis. You're ready to find one other way in to the climate fight, possibly using a few of the tools that assisted accomplished victory about this battleground. It will help that public support is available global warming deniers are missing out, gradually. And People in america extremely need to see more clean energy development. But a concerted, public push to rein in corporate polluters continues to be from the utmost necessity.
So let us savor the victory. And resharpen the knives.
