Portugal's opposition party,
Partido Socialista, is pondering a tax on storage media underneath the flag of copyright protection. Underneath the proposal, customers would pay &euro0.02 for each gigabyte of storage bought, so a 1TB Hard disk drive would cost around &euro21 ($28) extra, along with an additional levy on products
over that size means a 2TB drive might cost one more &euro103.2 ($135). It does not just visit desktop platters: USB stays, memory cards as well as mobile phones would be also billed, with any device packing 64GB of storage facing a surcharge of &euro32 ($42). A celebration member defended the concept, stating that the tax is targeted at experts who use bigger capacity drives -- consider most consumer HDDs include the absolute minimum size 160GB and also the legislation can also be allegedly designed to tackle piracy, we are in the dark about it accumulates -- except maybe in government coffers.
