Audi goes hybrid and ultralight with R18 Le Guys racers

Generally, whenever we talk hybrid cars, we are speaking in regards to a vehicle that either forces itself on batteries at low speeds, only firing in the car engine when some extra giddy-up is required, or perhaps an electric vehicle that turns the gas-powered piston pusher inside right into a glorified energy plant. Audi's e-tron quattro is a touch different, though. The R18 sports a four-wheel drive system that forces one axle with an auto, as the other will get its juice from the 510 hewlett packard V6. The e-tron quattro also offers a brother or sister, the Audi R18 Ultra, which seeks to pay for that added weight of the hybrid drive train by utilizing very lightweight materials, like carbon fibre, whenever we can -- such as the gearbox.
