In the lab: Lumia 920 image stabilization and 808 drop test at Nokia R&ampD (video)

From the lab Lumia 920 image stabilization and 808 drop test at Nokia R&ampD video

Yesterday's lab installment gave us an chance to pit the Lumia 920 against competing mobile phones inside a low-light capture scenario, but Nokia's standard battery of tests can be used to judge and improve way over stills shooting. Several stops during the day introduced us to some foam-filled seem chamber assigned with examining call quality in a number of conditions, an area with industrial freezers and ovens utilized to push the boundaries of operability, along with a rig that may shoot with interchangeable sensors and apply image quality calculations in tangible-time, with no phone around the corner. Regrettably, because of proprietary technologies and procedures, we were not allowed to photograph these first facilities, though we did have the ability to snap away at two other stations -- a platform that moved up and lower at adjustable speeds to check the Lumia 920's optical image stabilization, along with a machine that drops mobile phones against a block of concrete, utilized to simulate that-too-frequent occurrence of mobile phone models plunging towards pavement.

We have seen plenty good examples from the 920's OIS abilities now, therefore we will not get into a lot more detail on that front, but specialized (and pricey) equipment allows engineers introducing consistent processes -- this machine simulated hands shake at different speeds, as well as with exaggerated movement, the advantages were obvious. Another building contained the drop test contraption, which releases products from a variable height, allowing them to land on a block of polished concrete. We examined both 808 PureView along with a Samsung Universe S III in this way (with roughly 100 Lumia prototypes presently available, Nokia wasn't quite prepared to risk delivering someone to its dying). Both mobile phones continued to be in perfect condition following a drop, so the chances are they'll have the ability to handle an identical fall throughout regular use too (company reps provided to test our apple iphone 5, but we rejected handing it over). That systems up our week at Nokia's facilities in Finland -- you will see plenty more to understand more about once there exists a Lumia sample in hands, but you will find the OIS make sure concrete plunge videos ready at this time, published soon after the break.
