Photo voltaic power's diurnal restrictions may potentially be mitigated having a large bank of backup batteries but...similar fail-safe design enhancements may be requested diesel backup machines. Batteries, shock resistant fuel tanks, and flex mounted energy cables, to cite only a couple of good examples.
The question of resilience.
Sara Palin is resilient. Japan continues to be resilient when confronted with a tsunami. Everybody thought - superstitiously it works out - that The World was amazingly resilient until, a hundred years in to the Industrial Revolution, the shock wave produced through the carbon explosive device was measured in it's full effect.
At the end from the resilience pecking order are 100+ US nuclear energy plants depend solely upon analog process controls: lengthy after nucs on other continents went digital, and apparently oblivious to ip address resilience. Present day nuclear reactor controls aren't that diverse from individuals from 1957, as above. Resilience is tricky to find. (Note: the web pre-dates 9/11.)
