MIT's realtime indoor mapping system uses Kinect, lasers to aid rescue workers

We have seen the Kinect used that will help you find your groceries, however the sensor's image processing abilities have more safety-minded programs too. The fine minds at Durch combined the Kinect having a laser rangefinder along with a laptop to produce a real-time mapping rig for firefighters along with other save employees. The prototype, known as SLAM (for Synchronised Localization and Mapping) received funding in the US Air Pressure and also the Office of Naval Research, also it sticks out among other indoor mapping systems because of its concentrate on human (instead of robot) use and how it can produce maps without the assistance of any outdoors information, because of an on-board processor.
