Russia, it works out, sucks at more things these days killing journalists. Additionally, it sucks at not spilling a lot of oil into pristine conditions each year. New research implies that the oil-wealthy nation spills 5 million a lot of oil each year. To place that into perspective, that's the same as getting a Deepwater Horizon-scale oil disaster every two several weeks. Also it makes up about a complete 1% from the nation's output.

That's just bad business.

The AP has more (via Grist): Falling apart infrastructure along with a harsh climate mix to spell disaster within the world's biggest oil producer, accountable for 13 percent of worldwide output. Oil, stubbornly leaking through rusty pipelines and old wells, substances soil, kills all plants that grow onto it and destroys habitats for animals and wild birds. 500, 000 tons each year enter into rivers that flow in to the Arctic Sea, the federal government states, upsetting the fragile environment balance in individuals waters ...

Oil spills in Russia are less dramatic than problems within the Gulf or even the North Ocean, more the effect of a drip-drip of leaked crude than the usual sudden explosion. But they are more numerous compared to every other oil-creating nation including insurgency-hit Nigeria, and combined they spill much more than elsewhere on the planet, researchers say.

And do not think this kind of factor is going to be limited to Russia. It's another legacy to anticipate as oil wells and pipelines all over the world still age, rust, and break lower. There'll literally be hundreds of 1000's of oily taps seeping into various conditions across the globe, and little incentive to correctly reseal them.

However, these oily wastelands may, as we still ignore global warming and also the limits of resource consumption, eventually gain popularity sites for Mad Max-style marauders to fill their dying-mobiles before ongoing each campaign of pillage and plunder. So there's that.
