Perihelion: Our Planet obtained care of then back out again Bad Astronomy

Tonight at roughly 01:00 GMT (08:00 p.m. Eastern time), our planet is going to be in a special devote its orbit: perihelion, the nearest indicate the sun's rays. Our orbit round the Sun isn't a circle, but really an ellipse, as well as in early The month of january each year our planet s motion sweeps us nearest to the favorite star. We re a couple of million kilometers closer than average therefore it s a little difference, and never one you d notice unless of course you had been having to pay very close attention.

Apropos of the, I authored a guest publish about perihelion and what it really method for the great BBC blog known as 23 Levels. This is actually the companion blog for any TV documentary series they re making (to air later this season) where they traveled the world to film meteorological and astronomical occasions that occur throughout the path of twelve months. And also, since they started this journey at perihelion this past year, I m honored to possess this anchor position.

As they say, obviously. Anyway, look into the Related Posts links below for much more about past perihelia (they re indexed by reverse chronological order). This is always fun to create about this, and try to fun to explore this spinning ball of rock we survive and also the giant ball of plasma it orbits.
