Supercomputer gets a memory boost with 380 petabytes of magnetic tape

Recall the Cray XK6 in the College of Illinois that drives the nation's Science Foundation's Blue Waters project Well, it appears like it's obtaining a little memory upgrade, sorta. We are not speaking a clever new SSD here, or perhaps a sweet NAS, everything computational energy requires nothing under... tape. Okay, therefore it is really a complete storage infrastructure, and a lot of it -- 25 petabytes believe it or not -- is going to be disk-based. The relaxation -- a not minor 380 petabytes -- would be the traditional magnetic stuff. The concept would be that the disk part is going to be employed for immediate access, using the tape section becoming "nearline" storage -- something between accurate documentation an internet-based solution. Spectra Logic is supplying the tape, and states it'll take a few years to employ the entire lot. Once complete, the machine will offer the supercomputer's high tasks, for example focusing on how the cosmos developed following the Large Bang and, y'know creating new materials in the atomic level. And that we thought i was looking forward to out next desktop.
