Even though many might reckon the times of paper-based catalogs passed using the creation of the net, Ikea's adhering onto its tome for another year, and can dust its latest problem with augmented reality. It appears as though its 2013 catalog application will arrive with a few new camera-centric features on phones and pills -- the brief preview video shows a set of products that appear to be decidedly apple iphone and iPad-esque. The application uses image recognition software from Metaio (staying away from the jarring monotones of QR codes) to recognize specific pages and toss in some lightweight extra content, from cutaway sights of furniture to "inspiring" video shorts. The company behind the application has much loftier ideas for future years, including streaming live cooking shows or concerts into Ikea's imaginary rooms.
