Attack on Multiple Fronts
This issue is really large, and transportation is really essential in individuals lives, that people can't just attack it in one position and hope this will turn to be the correct one. For instance, we can not just concentrate on convincing individuals to walk or bike or take mass transit. We can not just concentrate on electric automobiles or on high-speed rail.

Executive Summary
Here's the short version: My idealistic side wishes that many in our environment problems triggered by transportation could be solved just be an enormous escape from the car. Walking, biking, bus rapid transit, light rail, high-speed rail, telecommuting, etc. Which should get it done, right
But my realist side informs me that even when you will find positive trends, like urbanisation, that will result in over fifty percent from the 7 billion humans to reside in metropolitan areas where it's much simpler just to walk, bike, go ahead and take bus, etc... Still it implies that another half will reside in rural places where there's most likely not going to do well mass transit, and where sights are most likely too spread to easily walk or bike (especially problematic in locations that end up with cold). So within the expected future, there's likely to remain a sizable fraction from the population that probably will not quit their cars.

So what is the optimal, but realistic, solution
I believe it's a mix of two primary things:
1) Get as numerous individuals who can do with no vehicle to do this, or at best considerably reduce just how much they drive (ie. not for commuting to operate).
2) Individuals that do keep using cars should drive models which are orders of magnitude cleaner than we now have. Instead of burn non-renewable fuels in inefficient car engines, they must be electric automobiles created using the greenest manufacturing processes, using the greenest materials, and billed with electricity from the power grid that's as clean as you possibly can (and which will keep getting cleaner with time, until it's 100% renewables).

Although it might appear just like a lesser goal than looking to get everyone to simply walk and bike and go ahead and take bus, In my opinion that we'll really accomplish more if you take this two-pronged approach compared to just concentrating on #1, because despite all of our efforts centered on that, I believe you will find still likely to be lots of cars left. We may as well also make individuals eco-friendly.

One further factor before we wrap this up.
