SanDisk makes 128-gigabit expensive nick, crams three bits per cell, takes mid-day off

SanDisk is promoting a nick that makes it membership within the exclusive 128-gigabit club. Not quite happy with simply matching the Micron / Apple effort, SanDisk and it is partner Toshiba claim their new memory uses 19- instead of 20-nanometer cells within the production process. Diminishing the dimensions is a factor, but SanDisk's new chips also employ its X3 / three-bit technology. Most memory stores just two bits per cell cramming in another means less cells, less plastic, more savings, cheaper memory, more happy nerds. Analyst Jim Handy estimations the cost per gigabyte for that tri-bit variety of expensive might be as little as 28 cents, in comparison to 35 for that Micron / Apple equivalent.
