A week ago we reported that throughout IFA 2011, Samsung squashed any gossips implying that they are likely to either buy or license Hewlett packard s webOS. Presently the fate of webOS software programs are still in limbo, but we all know the hardware side of webOS continues to be shut lower.
Today we've got some news concerning the webOS General Business Unit (GBU) and Hewlett packard s Personal Systems Group. The PSG placed the webOS GBU (software and hardware) that done webOS mobile products, and Hewlett packard s PC manufacturing division. The program side from the webOS GBU is splitting removed from PSG and will also be integrated into Hewlett packard s Office of Strategy and Technology (OST). So for the time being, it appears that Hewlett packard is going to be retaining webOS and Palm s intellectual property. The webOS group it's still headed up by Richard Kerris and Ari Jaaksi, who ll join OST Vice president Shane Robinson. The defunct hardware side from the webOS GBU will stay using the PSG, but likely all of the employees focusing on webOS hardware is going to be either get let go, or even more hopefully, be reassigned to various departments within the PSG.
None of this is actually surprising given past reviews, but none of them from it really states anything definitive by what Hewlett packard expects related to webOS software, or what will occur to the PSG whether it will likely be spun-off, or offered outright to a different company either. We have no clue if webOS is going to be licensed and used like a mobile OS on products from another manufacturer, or if webOS will still make a look and feel on Home windows Computers or Hewlett packard ink jet printers, or if webOS is going to be bought wholesale by another company. There have been gossips that after the PSG will get spun off, they'd produce mobile products running webOS, however, this is just whispers and unrealistic.
This is type of nice to determine just a little progress concerning the webOS-related reorg, however i seem like Hewlett packard continues to be moving far too slow and lost an chance to announce concrete plans for webOS, benefiting on all of the interest for that $99 TouchPads. Following the initial firesale happened, it appears such as the news cycle has basically forgotten webOS again. Unless of course some really surprising and/or greatly positive news about webOS s fate arrives soon, webOS will forfeit its chance in a third reincarnation and become consigned to some footnote in Palm and Hewlett packard s history.
