Built-in 1913, the Condit Dam was created like a hydroelectric facility to energy a close paper manufacturing facility -- however it included a hefty cost for that surrounding atmosphere. Even though resulting lake created through the backed-up river grew to become a well known tourist place to go for boating fanatics and swimmers, its effect on fish, wild birds, along with other marine species determined by a flowing waterway was immeasurable. Following the dam's operators were advised they'd need to add seafood steps to create the river passable once more, they recognized it might be cheaper to simply scrap the entire factor. So that is what they did.
Engineers initially breached the dam by detonating explosives, delivering a significant hurry water and silt downstream. The river produced through the dam was purged in about 2 hrs, one witness told National Geographic. The Condit Dam was one of several in the area slated for decommissioning through the Nature Service.
